0Well I've had the FD2 now for nigh on three months now and not even looked at another car for myself which, for me is VERY unusual! Going to keep this one for quite some time hopefully so i have decided to start a wee thread that i will add to now and again when i do something to the car. Got quite a few things i would like to do over the next year or so and so will up date this post as and when new bits arrive for anyone that might be interested! :D

So to start off with i have the following items which have now all been fitted with the exception of the flywheel. As some of you will remember i had clutch issues and so bought the flywheel just incase the original was damaged but it wasn't so sold it on.

Done a bit of digging and found that the problem i was experiencing with my clutch squealing when cold is quite common on ATR's and EP3R's and now it sounds like FN2/FD2's are also developing the same problem  . Exedy stage 1 clutch is now in and bedded in and have to say feels a lot better than the standard one did and there is no noise or slippage now 😉 !
While at JAE i managed to pick up some Do-Luck braided brake lines for a good price and they seem extremely well made. To go with these I also have some Motul RBF600 fluid for the braking system.
Car was about due its second service so got a hamp filter and some mobil1 0w-30 fully synthetic oil.
Finally there are a couple of bits of engine bay bling that i just couldn't resist! Some Mugen reservoir socks, oil cap and radiator cap. Quality of the finish of the Mugen bits is not as good as i would have expected but thought i would stick with Mugen as there are already a few mugen parts on the car.
After a track day and a sprint day my RE070's were finished and so ordered up some new rubber. Opted for michelin pilotsport 2's. Had these on my last car and was very impressed wth them so thought i would give them a go on the FD2. I think we have convinced ourselves that the RE070's are the be all and end all when it comes to tyres so i'm happy to report that i don't miss them. Car is much more exploitable in both wet and dry conditions now with the Michelins giving a much more consistent performance. There is a little flex in the sidewalls but it doesn't ruin the cars handling at all.

Made a bit of a boo boo when ordering as i was going to order the porsche specific ones which are N rated and have stiffer sidewalls and rim protection but instead i ordered the standard tyres.

Also bought a set of 17inch DC5 wheels to which i shall put some 888's, dunlop semi slicks or some Re070's for track/summer/dry day fun. they look really nice if a little small.

What they look like on the car:-

Also bought these from ebay thinking they were fake but they are actually the real deal! thought they were fake as they were less than half price compared to what they are advertised for elsewhere. Yet a little bit more Mugen bling!

They are number plate bolts incase you were wondering lol!

I know its nothing spectacular but its a start!

Next up will be the AST suspension followed by intake/exhaust and some other goodies!

Re: My "project" FD2

Thanks for the update......nice.

Interesting comments about the tyres. There are a few of us on here who have front sets of RE070's nearing the end of their (legally) useful lives 😉 and there doesnt seem to have been much feedback on realistic alternatives. So thanks for that.

Looking forward to your future updates !

Re: My "project" FD2

Nice one Simon, great write up. I'm definitely going to go for the Michelins so maybe I'll try and get the porsche specific ones.

Out of interest how are the Michelins wearing and how did they wear on your previous car? From my previous experience they should have a longer life than the RE070's.

Look forward to seeing your future mods.

Re: My "project" FD2

Out of interest where did you buy your Michelins from and how much did you pay? I've found them online for £141 fully fitted on Blackcircles.

Re: My "project" FD2

Yeah me too, it was either them or Hankook Rs2 but they are so damn hard to get!
I know someone with Eagle F1's and the car seems fine but Pilot sports sound like the ones!

Done 18k on my RE070's, baby and winter coming..... time for a change.
(Still grip like glue when they warm up though)

Re: My "project" FD2

I got them from Camskill and they were about £120 a tyre. I have a mate that can fit and balance them for me so this was the cheapest option for me.

this is the problem i found with them, you really had to get heat in them for them to really be any good, great on track, not so much for the road under "normal" driving. reckon that when new down to about half worn the Re070's are fine but i find that bridgestones tend to "go off" over the half worn mark for some reason, was the same with the RE010's i had on my integra.

Re: My "project" FD2

You saved the best till last with those number plate bolts! Good skills.

For all those wanting feedback on tyres. I’m running F1 Asymmetrics and they are a good compromise if you use your car for the daily grind. Sidewalls are on the soft side but help the ride enormously – a good alternative to the costly AST option. On track I found they cooked rather too quickly in the dry but as with the Pilotsports are very exploitable, no sudden breakaway dramas.

Re: My "project" FD2

Simon, I was only looking at them Mich's the other day thinking they look nice & wonder how they feel on the road..

Its good to see you getting stuff & keeping the dream alive 👏
Plus now its getting a little colder outside 'that noise' came back, I was thinking it was the release bearing as it stops when you press down on the clutch

Re: My "project" FD2

Nice work, DC5 wheels look way too small though :(

Does it use any oil being 0W30?

Has anyone upgraded the exhaust as yet? I like the tone of the standard but I reckon it could sound a little 'Meatier'

Re: My "project" FD2

The Michelins are great on the road in my opinion(i've only done about 400 miles on them though). the side walls are soft on them though and so you will get tyre flex but doesn't really bother me as there is plenty of grip there. Would have preferred the porsche specific ones as they have rim protection and are slightly stiffer sidewall.
as for the clutch it does seem to be a common problem althoguh people just live with it. mine was particularly bad and my fricton plate was glazed as well so needed changing. would recommend a stage 1 exedy i have to say though as it does seem to bite a lot better.

I know what you mean about the wheels but its easier and cheaper to get tyres for them for trackdays etc. Still undecided if i will keep them or not just didn't want to miss them for now.
Not used any oil at all mate, i alwyas use mobil1 in my hondas and never had a problem with oil consumption. will need topped up maybe twice a year if that.

Re: My "project" FD2

Thought i would put in a wee update on the project front as i've been a bit quiet of late due to work. Been busy on the internet though and got a bit carried away! After much searching around and humming an hawing i put an order in with Andy at vtecdirect.com (top bloke by the way! ) and so come the end of January the FD2 will sporting the following items:-

Toda Manifold
Toda de-cat/cat Back exhaust
J's Racing carbon induction kit
J's racing front strut brace
J's racing rear strut brace
J's racing Torque damper
J's racing carbon fibre/leather steering wheel
18inch Mugen GP wheels in gunmetal
Rays lightweight wheels nuts

Couple to that the AST suspension which is yet to be fitted and set up by either Litchfields or Progrip and i'm hoping to see a bit of an improvement all round. I now just need to figure out how to tell the misses that she'll be having her summer holidays at her mums house next year!

Re: My "project" FD2

Hi simon:

Bloody hell mate, that isd a serious mod list, pretty much everything I want bar the wheels, I'm jsut not prepared to pay for these mods under the current exchange rates, can I ask, did you get a good deal? PM me if you prefer...

Don't forget money for ECU and mapping, you will need it after going decat...

Re: My "project" FD2

Don't know if it will need re-mapped dude it should be able to compensate on its own if you reset the ecu, thats what i did on my tegs and had no problems. That said however there is a hondata flashpro on the list of things to come in the not so distant future hopefully!
I'll PM you the price breakdown dude, i'd say given current conditions i got a fair deal, i just got fed up waiting on the exchange rate to get better, could be like this for some time so decided to hell with it and took some money out my next house fund lol!

Re: My "project" FD2

Hi si:

Thanks for the cost breakdown.. I would defo go for a re-map to make the most of them mods, it will make a big difference...

Re: My "project" FD2

That sounds expensive  , you must get a good christmas bonus. lol

Good choice with the wheels!!

Re: My "project" FD2

No christmas bonus unfortunately, Had been saving up for other things (new house and track car) but decided to put some money into the FD2 as i think it deserves it. Planning on keeping the FD2 a while so want to enjoy it to the full!

Re: My "project" FD2

OMG

That little lot's worth more than my house!

Maybe.

Been eyeing the braces for a couple of wks now, let us know how you get on with 'em.
As you say, putting them with the AST should make a hell of a difference. ASTs have made
it a whole lot better in my opinion but with a couple of braces it should well sorted.
Anyone else running ASTs & braces?

There are a few bits in there that I am thinking of buying too, but i hesitate a bit. The wheels must have been quite expensive but i love them too. I hope my bonus is decent this year, cause i already know where to spend part of it.

Re: My "project" FD2

That's a serious mod list. Nice!!! I can't believe you engine will be happy with that breathing and no remap. Super lean. You gotta FlashPro to do it justice.

Re: My "project" FD2

Well finally ran out of will power today and ordered a flashpro to tie it all together! thats definitely it for this year......i think! :-D
