AST Suspension

Pilot Sport 2's

I've got these fitted to mine.

I was going to wait until they need replacing before going to either Potenzas or Toyos; always had the same debate with my EP3. Potenza's are good, except when wet, Toyos were better in the wet, but squidgy.

Are the Pilot Sport 2s a decent tyre then?

Has everyone who has AST's with the stock RE070's stuck with the standard tyre pressures?? What about those with different tyres, what pressures are you running?

Simon82 - I know you've not got your AST's fitted yet but just out of curiosty what tyre pressures do you run your Pilot Sport 2's at - is the same as stock?

G

Yeah i'm still running them at 2.0bar front and 1.8bar rear, never felt the need to mess about with them.

I'd say the pilot sports are a descent tyre but at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference.

Holly Bandwidth Batman - a reply within two minutes as opposed to two days...this place is rocking. 😉

Wow 32 PSI that's high. Do you find that you've lost any of the suppleness that you gained from the AST's or are the sidewalls that much softer that it doesn't matter?

I'm going to go for the pilot sport 2's next, they sound like the best all round tyre for the money and will hopefully last a bit longer.

Currently running my RE070's at 30psi all round but I feel like I've lost some of the improvemens from the AST's. I actually think a softer side wall would be better on this car, even if it does cost some of the preciseness of the steering.

Manufacturer tyre pressure recommendations (as per sticker inside drivers door) is Front 200Kpa(2.0bar) Rear 180Kpa(1.8bar). Can't se the need to have the rear pressures as high as the front personally but again it could be a personal thing. Are you still running 235's doodle?

G, perhaps the loss your are speaking of is due to the tyres having "gone off" coupled with the crap cold weather. I 've always found that past half worn bridgestones can be pretty ropey without any heat in them. Only my personal opinion but never found them to be good in the winter/wet.

I agree with you on this point. Winter/part worn means the tyre never works well, hence why i switched to Toyos at the time for my EP3.. a lot more lateral movement, but once you got used to it and could account for it, i thought they were more consistent as well as quieter on the motorway. All in my opinion obviously.

No, back with 225's now, and the new tyres are great...plus 8mm of tread means they'll last longer than the first set. Tom commented when fitting the SportMaxx's that the stock settings seemed quite low, and so we're trying the settings he advises for the DC5 to see how it goes. I suspect I'll drop back to 32/30 as the tail is a bit more lively than normal, but it's about the closest I've ever got to how things were when new.

Remember that the manufacturers pressures are designed for OEM tyres - i.e. RE070's which are borderline run-flats (I did 30 miles on a totally flat tyre without realising it). We don't really have anything like that here, so I can understand the logic of boosting the pressures to compensate. Ride quality is fine - less bouncy if anything because the tyres aren't doing as much of the bump absorption, which is something I found previously on softer tyres at stock pressure.

So, while investigating my leaky rear end, I thought i'd have a look at the AST adjustments.

It was still dark and i couldn't see the marking on top of the knobs, however, the rear adjusters were all the way clockwise.

Then i thought; "I'll check the fronts".

Popped open the bonnet. Then thought; "Where the f&*k are the front struts".

So, can anyone comment on what the acceptable rear setup should be and how I adjust the fronts?

I swear to God that I could not see the fronts and live in fear that they are really obvious and I've just opened up myself to scorn and ridicule. (It was dark and i had my mind on leaky rear ends - that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it)

Cheers
David

the front adjuster is at the bottom of the strut and you have to reach behind the front wheel (when turned on full lock) to get access to it.

Good stuff, I don't feel so stupid now.

Any one to pip up on number of turns etc?

Its covered earlier on in this post dude. Litchfields recommend three clicks front and six clicks rear to be a good all round setting. (Thats from the softest settings turning clockwise 😉 )

Wow, considering mine is the Litchfield car, they were set on the hardest settings!

Thanks for the click counts.

I'll have play with them this weekend, assuming my mate lets me out of the boot.

Yeah it is a bit surprising that they never checked/adjusted them back to where they "recommend" them to be. :???:

actually when I got my car from Litchfields my AST was set the same. I prefer it like that once you get used to it. My fronts are set to something like 10 now!

whats the point in having the ast suspension then if yoru going to run around with it on its hardest setting? surely thats just the same as having the standard suspension set up? :???:

I don't think it's that hard on the hardest setting, although it's not compliant, so I'll be fiddling this weekend and seeing how much of a difference it'll make.

And don't call me Shirley.

there's definitely a problem with the front drivers side (banging and rattling) and the rear passenger looks like something's up too.

as an update to this: finally got this sorted - the inner strut bearing was starting to wear so Curtis stripped both sides' suspension down and replaced. No more knocking noises now.

Full credit to Curtis - all done under warranty and didn't take long really. He even fitted my decat pipe..
